Overview
Our study abroad
partners, the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico and the
Universidad de Cantabria in Santander, Spain, offer comprehensive
programs in Spanish as a second language. At each university,
students whose Spanish is already strong may take regular courses in
any field. Both universities will arrange homestays with local
families as well as field trips.
Federal financial aid applies to both programs, and credit is
transferrable. Including your flight, tuition, room and board,
and pocket money, you should budget about $1800 for a
four to five week summer program, and about $5400 for a
semester. One student per semester is awarded a tuition waiver to the Guadalajara program, bringing total costs down to about $4000.
UL Lafayette also offers summer study abroad in Mexico City,
led by UL faculty in several disciplines who teach courses in English.
This program enables students who do not speak Spanish to broaden their
cultural horizons while while making progress toward their degrees. The
cost of this six week program is about $3000, not including pocket
money. Scholarships are available and Federal financial aid applies.
AHA Programs
AHA,
an academic program of the University of Oregon, will place UL
Lafayette students in study abroad programs in Argentina, Chile,
Mexico, and Spain, without charging out of state tuition or other
special fees.
The UO office of financial aid will work with UL students eligible for
Federal financial aid to maximize their award so as to make study
abroad feasible.
AHA programs are attractive for several reasons, including the presence
of a site director who will help resolve any bureaucratic or other
problems that may arise during your stay overseas, and the awarding of
a U.S. university transcript, in English, with letter grades. Cost
is slightly higher than the cost of the UL Lafayette programs in
Mexico and Spain, but it is worth keeping in mind that all incidental
expenses, including health insurance and excursions, are already
included in the AHA budget.
Programs at different sites are
tailored to different interests and needs. In Valdivia,
Chile, for instance, courses for foreigners are limited to the junior
and senior level, and it is possible to enroll directly in regular
courses at the Universidad Austral de Chile. The program in
Rosario, Argentina, on the other hand, offers freshman through junior
level courses in the Spanish language, in addition to humanities and
business courses taught in Spanish for students able to handle this,
and in English for students who are still in beginning and intermediate
language courses.

Grants and Fellowships for Study
Abroad
UL Lafayette and Federal
financial aid for UL Lafayette students applies only to UL Lafayette
sponsored programs and to our official partners. Students who
are eligible for Federal financial aid and who participate in AHA
programs, administered by the University of Oregon, will receive
financial aid through the University of Oregon.
The SALA scholarships page has extensive information
on scholarship opportunities for foreign study. Some examples are
the Institute for International Education's Corporate Awards
Program, which sponsors exchange opportunities to Spain and Mexico
for students in business, engineering, and science, and technology,
the Ford Foundation international fellowships, designed for students
in the social sciences, and the Fulbright Program, which supports
international scholars in all fields. The David Boren Fellowships
and the Gilman International Scholarships can be used for study in
Latin America, and the Rotary Foundation offers scholarships for
foreign study in a variety of disciplines.
Some of these fellowships--most notably the Boren and the Gilman--are
granted to students still working on their undergraduate
degrees. Some of the Fulbright and Rotary fellowships are also
designed for post-baccalaureate students, or students who have just
graduated. We strongly advise undergraduates to consider preparing
for these fellowships. When you graduate, you will be able to study
and travel in the world area that interests you as you move toward a
more advanced degree or a more specialized
career.
